afghanischer Herrscher (1919-29), * Paghman (Provinz Kabul) 1. 6. 1892, ✝ Zürich 25. 4. 1960; 1919 zum Emir ausgerufen, nahm 1926 den Königstitel (Schah) an. 1919 setzte er gegenüber Großbritannien die Unabhängigkeit seines Landes durch. Beeinflusst von den Ideen des türkischen Reformpolitikers Atatürk und dessen Anhängern in Afghanistan, den »Jung-Afghanen«, leitete er ein Modernisierungsprogramm in Afghanistan ein. Er stieß dabei aber auf den Widerstand von islamischen Geistlichen und Stammesführern und musste abdanken.
